Left Forum 2010 presents

THE CENTER CANNOT HOLD: Rekindling the Radical Imagination Call For Papers

Deadline: February 16, 2010

Pace University
One Pace Plaza
New York, NY 10038

Each spring in New York City, Left Forum gathers intellectuals and activists from around the world to address the burning issues of our times. The theme for 2010 is “The Center Cannot Hold: Rekindling the Radical Imagination.”

The ongoing capitalist crisis generated high hopes that the parties and social movements of the Left, both in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world, would be re-energized. So far this has not happened. The Left remains fractured and confused, drifting away from its labor base, while the Right seems to have emerged as the stronger or at least the more strident force. The result is that unemployment remains high, wages low, and insecurity grows. In the U.S., the Obama administration negotiates from the center, and concedes more and more to business interests and political conservatives. Can this be turned around? Can the hardships and opportunities generated by the capitalist crisis yet become the trigger for the revival of a transformative Left?

Conference registration information will be posted shortly.

Call for Panels

Each year sponsoring organizations and members of our Board submit panel proposals. We also welcome submissions from everyone on the broadly-inclusive left.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA: The Left Forum encourages sessions on a wide range of topics of interest to progressive movements. Panels are organized to reflect a diversity of views. We ask that panelists engage different, even opposing viewpoints around your chosen topic. Panel formats such as debate, author meets critics, panels with a respondent, or a moderated roundtable can help accomplish this. We also urge gender, age, and racial diversity to the extent you can. We hope many panels will critically engage the themes of the conference as they relate to our 2010 Conference Statement.

For ideas on panel topics look at last year’s conference program. We will accommodate proposals that our vetting committees think will be of interest to the broad Left Forum constituency.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Please note that the conference is a month earlier than it was in 2009. The submission deadline is February 6th, 2010.  Since this deadline is close to the conference date, we urge you to submit much earlier as a rush of last minute submissions will create undue hardship for conference organizers, which in turn will make these proposals harder to accommodate.

SUBMISSION PROCESS AND PROCEDURES:
CLICK HERE TO: register | submit your proposal online | log in and edit your proposal

This online submission process will enable you to update the proposal as needed. Step-by-step instructions are available HERE.

You will be asked to create a login name (we recommend a familiar one) and your email address. You will then be emailed a password and every time you want to change or update the proposal you will be asked to give your login name and password. After this you will hear back from us about your panel proposal. While all the panel information is not required right away, you will be asked to provide a title, participants (including a chair) and their affiliations with a paragraph/abstract or so explaining what you intend to do. Please include your contact information. It would be helpful if you could also include a brief paragraph describing each participant on your proposed panel. These will be included as bios in the printed program for panels that are accepted.

In order to cover conference costs we require that panelists register for the conference.
We ask panel organizers to help make sure that all speakers on their panel (discussants, etc.) are registered
; requests for scholarships will be considered. We invite foreign participation but unfortunately we cannot pay for travel costs for panelists or provide translators.
